Reagent Order Affects Lake Pigment Color_RTP.tif

Effect of reagent addition order on lake pigment color

When making cochineal lake pigments, Annelise noticed that the pigment took on a slightly different color (purple vs pink) depending on whether the alum or base was added first. A noticeable difference was also seen with anthocyanin-derived lake pigments. Swatches for three pigments -- black hollyhock, black knight scabiosa and cochineal--are shown in the traditional lake format (alum, t base), the reverse lake format (base, alum) and simultaneous addition. All pigments were made by Annelise.
