Natural Dye Pigments of Flying Pig Farm
Annelise first learned how to make lake pigments through a class taught by Mel Williams at Flying Pig Farm in Manitou Springs, CO in the summer of 2024. That first time, Annelise made a dyer's coreopsis lake pigment and everything seemed to go wrong... but she was hooked after figuring out that a Buchner funnel and vacuum line could speed up the process and make it considerably easier! Annelise found she enjoyed making her own natural dye lake pigments and took up watercolor to learn how to use them--something she'd never thought would happen. This print was made using lake pigments of the plant and insect-derived natural dyes that can be found on the farm. One pigment -- madder root--was made directly from plants grown on the farm. All of the pigments were made by Annelise except marigold, which was made by Sally Blankenship and Sulfur Cosmos, which was purchased from A. Gallo watercolors.
